According to this old boy in a pub "The army have their own underground
railway from Googe St. (London underground station) to Stansted airport.
I know because we [National servicemen] had to go there and change into
civvies in an underground complex then an underground train all the way
to Stansted on our way out to Hong Kong"

The best date for this is late 1950's and this chap got very shirty when
I suggested that perhaps he was suffering from tropical jabs. There was
obviously no point in perusing the matter to get more 'facts'.

It occurs to me there might be a grain of truth in the story. Was
Hendon aerodrome in use for this sort of thing at the time?

This could be explained by the Deep Level Shelter at Goodge Street,
that was used as a troop transit camp post-War until 1957. It would
be entirely feasible for troops billetted there to traipse up to the
Northern line platforms and take a train direct to Hendon, although
whether this actually happened is another matter. It's more likely
that the old boy in question has merely confused a number of separate
aspects of a journey as a single event.

Well that that was the whole point of my original post. I thought it
would be worthwhile to get it on record as a myth.

As any fule know:
- All public tunnels have secret bits
- All other tunnels are /secret/
- All secret tunnels must go via unfeasible routes to bizarre locations
- I once knew someone who saw it with their own eyes
- /They/ don't want you to know
